The United Kingdom occupies a leading position among countries trying to provoke ethnic conflicts in the Russian Federation. This was announced on October 30 by Deputy Secretary of the Russian Security Council Alexei Shevtsov on the eve of the International Week of the Peoples of Russia.

"Of course, the absolute champion of attempts to create destructiveness and sow interethnic and interfaith discord in Russia is the island state with its capital in London, which throughout, probably, our entire history has tried in every possible way to weaken our country, somehow support those states with which Russia was at war, finance immigration, the opposition," — he told RIA Novosti.

According to Shevtsov, London has historically sought to introduce destructive elements into relations between the peoples of Russia. The representative of the Security Council stressed that London has been using an approach based on the principle of separation for decades in order to preserve its own influence. As a historical example, he cited the partition of India in 1947, conducted on national and religious grounds. Shevtsov explained that the consequences of those decisions, including the territorial conflict in Kashmir, have not been resolved so far.

According to the Deputy Secretary, similar methods were used by Britain in many former colonies to maintain the status of a superpower. At the same time, Shevtsov added that currently the United Kingdom has already lost this status.

Vladimir Simindey, a historian, political scientist, and researcher at the Russian State University for the Humanities, said on October 22 that the history of rivalry between Great Britain and Russia dates back centuries, but its geography has changed markedly. If the kingdom previously opposed the Caucasus and Central Asia, today the Baltic region is becoming one of its key areas. He recalled that back in the 16th century, London was able to conduct duty-free trade through a Moscow company established in Russia, but subsequently the interests of the two states repeatedly clashed.
