Matvienko spoke about the development of cooperation between Russia and Turkmenistan
Russia and Turkmenistan are working on a number of joint projects in the economic, logistics and humanitarian fields. This was announced on October 7 by the Speaker of the Federation Council, Valentina Matvienko.
"Naturally, we discussed the bilateral agenda. It was thanks to [Leader of Turkmenistan] Gurbanguly Myalikgulyevich and our President [Russian Federation Vladimir Putin] that they created the strong foundation of friendship between our states and cooperation, which has grown to a strategic partnership, and our bilateral relations are developing steadily and very successfully," she said during a conversation with journalists in Turkmenistan.
According to Matvienko, Moscow and Ashgabat have prepared three joint events: the international forum "Dialogue of Women for a Peaceful Future", a conference with the participation of WHO on access to healthcare and a conference on demography. In addition, the intergovernmental joint commission between Turkmenistan and Russia continues to work, and its next meeting is currently being prepared.
Trade and economic ties are also developing successfully: last year, the trade turnover increased by 27.5% and almost reached $1 billion. Major economic, investment, and logistics projects are under development.
Matvienko also mentioned active humanitarian cooperation: the days of culture of Turkmenistan were held in Russia, and reciprocal events are being prepared. Three projects are under development: the new building of the Russian-Turkmen Pushkin School, the opening of the Turkmen-Russian University and the construction of a new building of the Russian Theater. In addition, the countries maintain ties in the field of education: currently 54,000 students from Turkmenistan study at Russian universities, and the quota of state scholarships for Turkmen students has been increased to 500 annually.
On September 27, the Kremlin's website reported that Putin, in a congratulatory telegram to President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov on the occasion of the country's Independence Day, noted that relations between Moscow and Ashgabat are in the nature of an in-depth strategic partnership. The Russian leader confirmed Moscow's intention to continue constructive dialogue and close joint work to further enhance the entire range of bilateral ties for the benefit of the friendly peoples of the two countries.
