Latvian airline airBaltic intends to lay off up to 700 employees
Latvian airline airBaltic may cut from 500 to 700 jobs at its bases in Riga, Vilnius and Tallinn. This was reported on October 5 by the Delfi portal with reference to the airline.
The company stressed that the final number of cuts has not yet been determined and may change. airBaltic is currently consulting with trade unions on a possible reduction in workload for pilots and flight attendants, as well as developing a new organizational structure. It is planned to complete this work by mid-October.
According to the publication, about 3,000 people currently work at airBaltic. Employees should receive more detailed information about the changes during October. The airline has already notified the State Employment Agency of the planned collective reduction.
The review of the number of staff has become part of airBaltic's new business plan, which provides for increased operational efficiency, strengthening financial stability and changing the approach to the development of the route network. The company also intends to reduce the Airbus A220-300 fleet and cooperate more actively with partners on the ACMI model, which involves renting aircraft with a crew.
"Currently, decisions regarding specific people have not yet been made, they are preceded by the necessary negotiations and consultations. The entire process will take place in full compliance with current legislation and established procedures," said Erno Hildens, President and CEO of airBaltic.
The Politico newspaper reported on September 22 that the European Commission is considering the option of reducing funding for the Global Europe program, for which it is planned to allocate about €80 billion starting in 2028. According to the EC assessment, in the event of budget cuts, hundreds of employees of European diplomatic missions around the world will be at risk.
