A resident of Surgut had a skull trepanation due to complications of a runny nose
A resident of Surgut underwent brain surgery after four months of self-treatment of a runny nose. This was announced on September 15 by the Surgut Trauma Center.
"The long-term inflammatory process literally melted the bone [of the skull], spread to the dura mater, and then to the substance of the brain. Neurosurgeons Alexander Smirnov and Evgeny Kurbatov performed decompressive trepanation with purulent focus sanitation. The operation went well," the trauma center's community on the "VKontakte" social network reported.
The 21-year-old boy developed chronic frontitis, and the infection penetrated the cranial cavity, destroying the posterior wall of the frontal sinus and causing an abscess in the right frontal lobe of the brain. After the neurosurgery, ENT doctors joined the treatment and performed an autopsy of the right frontal sinus to clean it of bone fragments, pus and fungal masses.
At the moment, the young man has already been discharged, and in the future he will be monitored by a neurologist and an otorhinolaryngologist. He was also prescribed outpatient treatment aimed at controlling the inflammatory process, restoring the function of the paranasal sinuses and preventing repeated complications. In six to eight months, doctors will discuss the need for skull plastic surgery after trepanation.
On August 18, surgeons in Moscow removed a brain tumor from a five-year-old boy, whose symptoms had long been mistaken for gastritis or cholecystitis. The operation was performed at Dr. Roshal's Clinic. The doctors said that the boy was brought to the emergency department with a diagnosis of "acute cholecystitis", but a blood test and ultrasound did not reveal such a pathology. Then the surgeon suspected neurological problems, which were confirmed by a CT scan of a large neoplasm.
