Axios learned about the US attack on two Iranian tankers as part of Trump's new strategy

The US military has attacked two Iranian government tankers as part of a new strategy to counter Tehran's attacks in the Strait of Hormuz. This was reported on September 2 by Axios, citing American officials.

According to the newspaper, the vessels were anchored off the coast of Iran north of the line of the US naval blockade. American drones (UAVs) fired missiles at the tankers' engine rooms.

One of the sources told Axios that these actions were part of the tanker-for-tanker policy approved by US President Donald Trump. It involves retaliatory measures to Iran's attacks against ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

In total, according to the portal's interlocutors, about 100 targets were hit on Tuesday, September 1. Among them are air defense facilities of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, radar systems, mine laying facilities, communications centers, as well as anti—ship missile launchers and attack UAVs.

According to one of the Axios sources, the series of strikes "bought for at least a month" a reduced threat to commercial shipping in the strait.

The day before, the United States Central Command announced the start of a new wave of strikes against Iran. The US military has attacked targets of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, including air defense facilities, radar systems, naval assets and structures, mine installations and communications facilities.

In response, Tehran attacked the American Sheikh Isa military base in Bahrain. Attacks on Jordan were also recorded — 10 ballistic missiles were shot down there, three more fell on the territory of the kingdom.

Later, on September 2, Trump said that he was not trying to reach an agreement with Iran, despite reports of possible negotiations. The American leader noted that he considers the current situation to be more beneficial, in which the United States, according to him, has "almost complete control" over the Strait of Hormuz, and the Iranian economy is "completely collapsing."
