Russia is facing opposition from Western countries on transport routes, in particular in the North—South direction, but this does not hinder the implementation of the project. This was announced on August 31 by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk in response to a question from Izvestia columnist Viktor Sineok.

According to the Deputy Prime Minister, North-South is a large—scale project that covers the territories of Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Mongolia and China, and also includes the Caspian region. Overchuk stressed that most of the land routes pass through friendly states, which guarantees their security.

North—South is a very big project. It is not concentrated in one country or one place. "North—South" includes Azerbaijan, the Caspian Sea, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Mongolia, and China. It's all North—South," Overchuk said in an interview with Izvestia.

The main goal of developing these arteries is to create favorable competitive conditions for exports from Russia and other EAEU member states. The Deputy Prime Minister added that despite external constraints, cooperation with partners in these areas remains active.

Overchuk also reported on the negotiations between Russia and Kazakhstan on the development of navigation on the Irtysh River, which flows through the territory of the three states. The parties are currently preparing a master plan for the route. This topic has already been discussed at a recent meeting in Omsk.

July 31, Head of Russian Railways (RZD) Oleg Belozerov said that the company is currently seeing an increase in shipments along the North–South international transport corridor, in particular containers. A positive trend (+5.5%), he added, is observed in logistics relations with China, which are supported by the state.
