Trump called Canada one of the worst countries in the world for doing business
Canada is one of the worst countries in the world for doing business. This was announced on August 26 by US President Donald Trump.
"I do not know how you feel about Canada, but it is one of the worst countries in the world to deal with," Trump said.
The head of the White House added that this has been happening for quite some time. The American leader stressed that the current and previous Canadian governments had been using the United States for decades. He noted that Ottawa imposes very high duties, for example, on milk — 400%.
"They are imposing duties. They use us like they're our staff. But they are not a staff. They took away the automotive industry and the agricultural industry from us. You know, farmers can't sell anything there because the duties are so huge, and yet they want to sell to us without any restrictions," Trump clarified.
The American president said that Canada has nothing that the United States would necessarily need. In addition, Washington loses more than $60 billion annually due to Canada.
The Guardian newspaper reported on the same day that prices for paper products, including toilet paper, were rising in the United States amid an intensifying trade war with Canada. It was clarified that in 2024, the United States imported toilet paper from Canada in the amount of $328 million, which makes the country the largest exporter of this product.
The United States re-imposed 50 percent tariffs on Canadian goods on August 22. Canada, in turn, will impose retaliatory duties of 15%, 25% and 50% on imports of goods from the United States with a total value of $27.6 billion starting on September 8. The new tariffs will affect American products in a number of key industries.
