Kirill Dmitriev, the Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation, sarcastically suggested that Canada end trade disputes with the United States by joining them. He wrote about this on August 22 on the social network X (ex. Twitter), commenting on the statement by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Carney announced the suspension of trade negotiations with the United States and the imposition of retaliatory duties.

"Just become the 52nd state and relax," he wrote.

Later, Dmitriev explained that the status of the 51st state could be occupied by Greenland.

The Reuters news agency reported on the same day that Canada refused to finalize a trade agreement with the United States, which is why Washington is imposing new duties on some Canadian goods. According to U.S. Representative Jamison Greer, Ottawa rejected Washington's proposal, which, according to the American authorities, would allow Canada to obtain favorable terms and improve the position of its exporters in the American market.

On July 20, US President Donald Trump imposed additional 50% duties on a number of Canadian goods. As part of the negotiations with Ottawa, the head of the White House on August 19 suspended the introduction of restrictions for three days. The duties applied to almost 300 categories of Canadian products, including smartphones, communications equipment, cement, plastics, textiles, furniture, sports equipment, as well as a wide range of alcoholic and dairy products.
