The US has re-imposed 50% duties on Canadian goods after the failure of negotiations
Canada has refused to finalize a trade agreement with the United States, which is why Washington is imposing new duties on some Canadian goods. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on August 22.
According to U.S. Representative Jamison Greer, Ottawa rejected Washington's proposal, which, according to the American authorities, would allow Canada to obtain favorable conditions and improve the position of its exporters in the American market.
He noted that 50% customs duties on certain Canadian goods will come into force on Saturday. At the same time, Greer added that Washington does not expect retaliatory measures from Ottawa.
The American representative clarified that Canada wanted to receive additional concessions as part of the negotiations. No new meetings between the parties have been scheduled yet.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed the decision to suspend trade negotiations with the United States. He said Ottawa would impose retaliatory tariffs to protect the country's workers and businesses.
On July 20, US President Donald Trump imposed additional 50% duties on a number of Canadian goods. As part of the negotiations with Ottawa, the head of the White House on August 19 suspended the introduction of restrictions for three days. The duties applied to almost 300 categories of Canadian products, including smartphones, communications equipment, cement, plastics, textiles, furniture, sports equipment, as well as a wide range of alcoholic and dairy products.
