Amur pikes in the Primorsky Aquarium have become attached to humans
Biologists at the Primorsky Aquarium in Vladivostok have discovered that Amur pikes are able to attach themselves to certain people and even recognize them. This was announced on August 21 by the press service of the institution, noting that the fish had been observed for several years.
Two groups of Amur pikes live in the aquarium: a pair of young individuals in the aquarium of predatory Amur fish and two adult fish in the exposition "The Middle current of the Amur River". The researchers noticed that the young pikes show exceptional affection for senior specialist Alexander Nadtochin, who takes care of them.
"How exactly they recognize him and how they generally distinguish people from each other remains a mystery, but judging by their behavior, they undoubtedly do it. When "their man" goes on a weekend or vacation, the pikes may even refuse to eat," explained a representative of the aquarium to RIA Novosti.
Attempts by other employees to feed the fish cause concern and throwing around the aquarium. Scientists admit that it remains a mystery how exactly pikes distinguish humans, but their behavior leaves no doubt about it.
Adults from another exhibit behave differently: they are calm, peaceful, take food from any employee and do not participate in the hustle during feeding, but patiently wait their turn.
However, they also have an individual character and a "subtle mental organization," as biologists put it. The discovery shows that Amur pikes are not just predators, but have complex behaviors and are capable of selective attachment.
In the Amur Region, 50,000 sturgeon fry were released into the Zeya River. The party has become a record in the history of such actions in the region. The work was carried out as part of a campaign to compensate for the damage to nature caused by industrial enterprises.
