Iran's Foreign Ministry estimated the damage from oil spills at trillions of dollars

Pollution of the waters of the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman has caused trillions of dollars in damage to Iran's coastal areas over the past decades. This was announced on August 12 by the representative of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Ismail Bagai.

"This incident is just one of the clear examples of large—scale pollution, <...> which in recent decades has worsened the state of the waters of the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman, as well as the marine ecosystem of the region, causing damage to the coastal areas of Iran by trillions of dollars," he wrote on the social network X (ex. Twitter)

The reason for Bagai's statement was the footage of pollution of the coast of Qeshm Island that appeared on the Web. Preliminary data points to a foreign dry cargo vessel as a possible source of the spill. Pollution was recorded on three sections of the coast and on part of the sea surface.

A representative of the Iranian Foreign Ministry said that all parties using commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz are legally and morally responsible for eliminating environmental damage.

On August 8, the tanker Caroline Bezengi crashed off the coast of Oman, which is under sanctions and carries almost 1 million barrels of oil. The ship ran aground about two months ago near a protected water area off the island of Qibliya in southwestern Oman. According to published satellite images, the oil spill has already covered almost 800 square kilometers of the sea surface.
