Evgeny Alekseevich Znamensky is a veteran of the Great Patriotic War, a participant in the defense of Moscow and the storming of Berlin. Born on August 13, 1925 in Serpukhov, Moscow province, during the war he served as a machine gunner and a reconnaissance gunner, and completed his military career with the rank of senior sergeant. Early years

Evgeny Znamensky was born into the family of actor, director and artist Alexei Znamensky and Alexandra Golosova. His father was repressed in 1938 and later posthumously rehabilitated.

After the outbreak of World War II, Znamensky worked at the Krasny Tekstilshchik factory. In his youth, he participated in the defense of Moscow: he helped extinguish fires after air raids, defused incendiary bombs and participated in the construction of anti-tank structures.

In 1943, he completed the 120-hour Young Fighter training program and was drafted into the Red Army.

Participation in the Great Patriotic War

Evgeny Znamensky began his military career in 1943 near Stalingrad. He served in infantry and artillery units, participated in battles as part of the Steppe, Don and 1st Belorussian fronts.

During the war, he took part in the liberation of Ukraine, Belarus, Poland and the fighting in Germany. As part of the artillery reconnaissance, he participated in the storming of Berlin.

During the street battles in the German capital, Znamensky was engaged in identifying enemy positions and transmitting data for artillery strikes. According to his recollections, in Berlin he also made sketches of military operations using a captured tablet.

During his service, he was injured and concussed twice. He ended the war on May 2, 1945 with the rank of senior sergeant in artillery intelligence.

After the war

After the end of the war, Znamensky continued his service in the Far East, then worked in construction on Sakhalin and spent some time in the Kazakh SSR.

In 1956, he returned to Serpukhov, where he worked as a driver and car paint master. Later, he moved to the village of Barybino in the Moscow region, where he worked as an artist at a boarding school and organized an amateur film studio.

He also worked in the Interior Ministry system in Domodedovo. In 1972, he moved to the village of Kruglyansky in the Kireevsky district of the Tula region. He has been retired since 1985.

Social activities and later years

Evgeny Znamensky is actively involved in the veteran movement and is engaged in patriotic education of young people.

In 2025, he attended the Victory Day Parade on Red Square in Moscow, where he was present at the podium next to Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. During the event, the veteran spoke about his desire to convey the wishes of friendship between Russia and China to the Chinese leader.

On August 13, 2025, Evgeny Znamensky celebrated his 100th birthday. Despite his age, he maintains an active lifestyle, exercises and participates in community service.

Evgeny Znamensky was married. He has two daughters. One of them is Lyudmila.
