In Russia, sweet consumption has reached its lowest level since 2004

In Russia, sugar and confectionery consumption decreased to the lowest level since 2004 in 2025. This is evidenced on August 11 by statistics that were studied by RIA Novosti.

It is noted that an average of 28.2 kg of products per person in terms of sugar. At the same time, a year earlier the figure was 28.8 kg per person, while in 2004 the consumption of sugar and confectionery was at the level of 26 kg.

In addition, pure sugar consumption decreased by 3.5% last year, or by 460 g, to 12.7 kg per person against 13.2 kg a year earlier. The consumption of jam and jam also decreased to 6.25 kg from 6.34 kg, and the consumption of honey decreased to 960 g from 1.01 kg per person.

At the same time, the volume of consumption of chocolates and chocolates remained at the level of 5.8 kg per person, and other confectionery products — 4.4 kg.

Why are sales of desserts with a short shelf life falling and how is the price increase affecting this?

Anatoly Tikhonov, Director of the Center for International Agribusiness and Food Security at the Presidential Academy, said on June 27 that global sugar prices could rise significantly due to the El Nino climate phenomenon, which could lead to lower yields in India. If India stops exports, prices may rise to $750-800 per 1 ton.

At the same time, in January it was noted that in 2025 Russia increased sugar exports, exporting more than 1 million tons. Compared to 2024, sugar exports increased by 18% in physical terms and by 14% in monetary terms. The maximum figure in terms of supply volume was recorded in 2020.
