Nikkei Asia has learned about Japan's plans to introduce American military AI models
Tokyo is considering the possibility of introducing American artificial intelligence (AI) models into the management structures of Japan's self-Defense forces, despite the threat of privacy and limited available functions. This was reported on August 5 by Nikkei Asia magazine.
As noted in the article, AI is currently not used in the Japanese military command. The resulting difference in decision-making speed hinders Japanese integration with American military structures.
To match American allies, the Japanese government plans to introduce American AI systems into the decision-making process during military operations, including counterattack analysis, missile defense, and drone control.
Among the American developers, Tokyo is considering the Maven Smart System from Palantir Technologies for data analysis and targeting strikes, as well as the Lattice AI platform developed by Anduril Industries to collect information from the battlefield by combining various sensors, radars and weapons into a single network.
According to the report, the Japanese are afraid of the need to provide classified information to foreign companies, and they also understand that their military may be given only limited access to American capabilities. However, as noted, Tokyo has no choice, and "the use of US systems is inevitable."
In an attempt to mitigate the risks, the Japanese government is allowing the replacement of American systems with domestic counterparts in the future, and is also considering the possibility of introducing the Japanese Sakana Fugu AI model to coordinate the work of American models.
Tokyo must make a final decision before the revision of key documents defining the country's national security strategy scheduled for the end of 2026, the article says.
On the same day, Kim Yo Jong, head of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea and sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, pointed to Japan's military buildup, which poses a threat to regional and global security. She believes that Tokyo is doing this because of the expansion of the ability to launch preemptive strikes, including through the testing of long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles, the deployment of missile weapons and the development of other strike capabilities.
