Warnings about possible health hazards should be placed on packages of carbonated drinks and chips, and advertising of such products in children's promotions should be limited. This was announced on August 1 by Tatyana Butskaya, first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Family Protection, Fatherhood, Motherhood and Childhood (United Russia).

"We need to inform our families with children about the dangers of these products. These can be either traffic light—type signs or large inscriptions like on cigarettes," Butskaya told TASS.

The MP noted that manufacturers of snacks and sugary drinks often use images of popular cartoon characters on packages. According to her, this can lead parents and children to misconceptions about the safety of such products, especially if they are associated with cartoons with the age label 3+.

Butskaya stressed that such products should not participate in promotions, especially aimed at children. She also stated that even if consumed in small amounts, such products can pose a risk if consumed regularly.

According to the parliamentarian, another problem is the formation of addiction to such products, which also requires attention.

Neurologist Olga Butenko said on May 7 that ultra-processed foods, including chips and sugary soda, can negatively affect attention, memory and brain function if consumed regularly. According to the expert, chips or soda alone do not cause instant brain damage, but the danger is precisely the constant presence of such products in the diet. This is especially true for children and teenagers.
