The United States reported the first execution of two prisoners in one day in more than 60 years.

For the first time since 1964, the U.S. state of Florida carried out a double death penalty in one day. This was reported by USA Today on July 29.

James Duckett, 68, a former police officer, was the first to be executed that day. In 1987, he was found guilty of murdering an 11-year-old girl. Five hours later, the death sentence was carried out against American Dominic Occhicone. He was convicted of the 1986 murder of his ex-fiancee's parents.

Occhicone, 80, became the oldest prisoner ever executed in the state of Florida. In the entire history of the United States, he took the second place in the list of the oldest convicts who were subjected to the death penalty. According to the publication, the average age of those sentenced to capital punishment in the United States in 2023 was 54 years.

A total of 66 prisoners have been sent to execution in the United States since January 2025, with 31 sentences carried out in Florida. Since the beginning of 2026, this state has accounted for 63% of the total number of executions in the country.
