Over the past two years, the number of abortions in Russia has decreased by almost 12%. This was announced on July 28 by Chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

According to her, the best result was recorded in the Vologda Oblast, where the number of abortions decreased by 45%. At the same time, the Chairman of the Federation Council drew attention to the fact that by the end of 2025, the birth rate has increased in 18 regions and the number of large families is increasing.

"This is a response to the support measures that have been developed by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, and the measures [according to which] higher education institutions have created conditions for student families with children," Matvienko explained.

At the same time, Matvienko said on April 3 that there would be no law in Russia prohibiting girls from undergoing an artificial termination of pregnancy. According to her, the right to choose and make the final decision in this area remains with the woman.
