Cosmonaut Kud-Sverchkov spoke about the experience of using AI on board the ISS

On July 28, Russian cosmonaut Sergei Kud-Sverchkov spoke about the difficulties of training artificial intelligence (AI) to work on the International Space Station.

According to him, one of the main problems was the peculiarities of communication in orbit — the combination of Russian and English, a large number of technical terms and a high noise level at the station.

"When working in space, when processing voice, it is necessary to take into account that, firstly, we use a very complex technical language, it is a large number of terms, it is a mixture of Russian and English. If you start talking to an artificial intelligence in a mixture of languages, you need to understand that it will not take everything correctly. Plus, there is high noise at the station, that is, noise in the background is about 60 dB," the cosmonaut said at a post-flight press conference.

Kud-Sverchkov noted that now specialists continue to test the software, and the results of the AI's work in orbit have already been transmitted to Earth for analysis.

According to the cosmonaut, ready-made terrestrial solutions will not always be able to work effectively in space, so the system needs to be further adapted to the station's features. He added that AI will be able to help the crew after completing the training and technology preparation phase.

The Soyuz MS-28 spacecraft with two Russian cosmonauts and an American astronaut on board successfully landed in Kazakhstan on July 26. Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergey Mikaev, as well as NASA astronaut Christopher Williams, returned to Earth.
