"On Tuesday, an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 occurred in the southern Japanese prefecture of Kumamoto, cutting off the power supply to thousands of homes," the publication says.

Emergency warnings have been issued for residents of Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Saga, Oita and Miyazaki prefectures located on the island of Kyushu.

Large companies are located in the earthquake area. In particular, the Japanese corporation Sony and the Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer TSMC have factories in the region. A Sony representative said that the company is assessing the consequences of the incident. TSMC has not yet commented on the situation.
