Illegal maintenance of foreign weapons was stopped in Crimea

Employees of the Federal Security Service of Russia in the Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol have stopped the illegal activities of a Russian citizen suspected of illegally providing maintenance services for weapons of a foreign state. This was announced on July 24 in the department.

"The Federal Security Service of Russia for the Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol has suppressed the illegal activities of a Russian citizen involved in the illegal provision of maintenance services for weapons of a foreign state, in respect of which export control is established by the legislation of the Russian Federation," the report says.

The investigation revealed that a resident of Sevastopol with many years of experience in the defense sector contacted representatives of a foreign research institute on his own initiative. He offered the foreign defense ministry services to determine the technical condition, that is, the pre-repair defects of naval artillery installations.

The department stressed that the man reliably knew about the belonging of these works to military products. Such services are regulated by federal legislation on export control and military-technical cooperation between Russia and other countries. By his actions, the suspect violated state interests in this area.

According to a representative of the Federal Security Service of Russia for the Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, a criminal case has been opened against the defendant under Part 1 of Article 189 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Illegal export from the Russian Federation or transfer of goods and technologies, weapons, military equipment, provision of services subject to export control"). The ministry added that the sanction of the article provides for punishment in the form of imprisonment for up to seven years.

"By itself, the provision of services and the performance of work in the field of creation, design, development, repair of weapons and everything related to military products is not a criminally punishable act. <...> An individual cannot independently carry out these works, as this is not provided for by federal law," said an operational officer of the regional FSB.
