Hungarian President Shujok will step down after signing the constitutional amendment.

On July 18, Hungarian President Tamas Szuyok signed an amendment to the country's constitution providing for the early termination of his term as head of state.

"My signature is the final seal of full and unconditional respect for the duties of the President of the republic and for the very institution of the presidency. A sign that I fully complied with the Basic Law of Hungary and did not violate it," Shujok said in a video message posted on Facebook (owned by Meta, recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).

He explained that he does not have the constitutional tools to counteract the amendment adopted earlier by the national Parliament.

Prime Minister Peter Magyar clarified on national TV channels that Shujok had approved the 17th amendment to the Constitution of the Republic. According to the document, the powers of the head of state will expire at midnight on Monday, July 20.

"In accordance with the provisions of the basic law, from July 20, the powers of the President of the Republic will be temporarily exercised by the Chairman of the National Assembly, Agnes Forsthoffer. The National Assembly must elect a new president of the republic within 30 days," Magyar said.

Thus, Agnes Forsthoffer will become acting president instead of Tamas Shujok, who has been removed from office, until a vote is held on a new candidate for the country's leader.

State media have begun to soften their tone towards the opposition and the EU, but systemic changes are still far away.

On July 11, Magyar threatened the president with launching impeachment proceedings if Shujok did not leave office voluntarily. Magyar believes that Shujok cannot remain in office because, in his opinion, he did not perform his duties properly and contributed to government abuses during the time of former Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

A day earlier, on July 10, a rally was held in Budapest against the Magyar's proposal to dismiss the head of state. The Magyar Nemzet newspaper noted on June 30 that the excessively radical actions of the current Hungarian Prime Minister are causing concern in the West and may lead to the return to power of former Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
