In Russia, omens have been given special importance since ancient times. They were used to judge the weather, when to sow and harvest, and what to expect in the future. Therefore, every day of the national calendar was full of rituals and superstitions. Izvestia tells about the popular signs of July 14 and about the church holidays that fall on this day.

Folk signs for July 14th

In Russia, on July 14, summer Kuzminki was celebrated. Unlike the autumn Kuzminki, which was celebrated on November 14 and was associated with the completion of the threshing of bread, the summer holiday fell at the height of haymaking. During this period, the peasants were engaged in harvesting hay, the main fodder for livestock for the winter.

The men went to the meadows early in the morning, while the women remained to work in the vegetable gardens. At this time, the first vegetables were being harvested, as well as raspberries and gooseberries. Jams, compotes, and fruit drinks were made from them. It was believed that it was on this day that the blanks turned out to be especially tasty and healing.

Special attention was paid to observing nature. According to these signs, the rest of the summer and the future harvest were judged. So, the clear weather on July 14 foreshadowed a warm July and August, while rain could indicate a wet autumn.

Other signs of the day:

  • lots of dew in the morning — for clear and warm weather;
  • fog creeps over the water — for a sunny day;
  • A westerly wind is blowing, leading to prolonged rains;
  • Swallows and swifts fly low in the face of bad weather;
  • the leaves began to turn yellow by early autumn.

What not to do on July 14th

There were also many prohibitions associated with summer Kuzminki among the people. For example, laziness and idleness were not welcome on this day. In the old days, it was believed that the well-being of a family in winter depended on how well the work was done. Also, quarrels, excessive revelations and complaints were avoided on the holiday, as, according to beliefs, this promised failures in the future.

What else can't be done on July 14th:

  • leaving work tools in disarray leads to losses;
  • Starting new important things can be fruitless.;
  • Throwing away leftovers was believed to lead to poverty.;
  • to envy someone else's wealth or happiness is to bring trouble upon yourself.;
  • to refuse help is to reject the good along with the refusal.

What is the church holiday on July 14th?

On July 14, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the Silverless Saints Cosmas and Damian, who lived in Rome in the III century. They became famous as healers and miracle workers. Having received the gift of healing from God, the saints treated the sick free of charge, for which they were called "unpaid doctors."

They combined the help of the sick with preaching, telling the suffering: "It is not by our own power that we heal diseases, but by the power of Christ." One day they were taken to Emperor Karin, who demanded that the saints renounce their faith. Suddenly, he was struck by a disease and, having received healing, released the healers. Kosma and Damian died at the hands of their mentor, who, mad with envy, lured them into the mountains and killed them, dumping their bodies into the river.

On the same date, the martyr Potita of Gargar is remembered. He lived in the 2nd century and came from a noble pagan family. According to legend, after his baptism, Poteet devoted his life to serving God and helping people. For his faith, he was subjected to severe trials and was executed during the persecution under Emperor Antoninus Pius. The relics of the saint were found in 1506 and are located in Italy.

Prayers on July 14th

Saints Cosmas and Damian, as healers, are prayed for healing from diseases and strengthening their health. They are also asked to get rid of enmity and envy. The Martyr Potita is addressed with prayers for spiritual strength and protection from various ills. You can read a common prayer to the martyr or address him in your own words.

Prayer to Cosmas and Damian of Rome

"To you, Saints without silver and wonderworkers Cosmo and Damian! <...> We, the unworthy, kneel down and cry out fervently: do not despise the supplication of us sinners, the weak, who have fallen into many iniquities and sin all our days and hours. Beseech the Lord to grant us, His unworthy servant, His great and rich mercy; deliver us from all sorrow and sickness, for you have received from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ the boundless grace of healing, for the sake of firm faith, free healing, and your martyrdom. If you hear us praying, <...> ask the Lord for all that is beneficial in our temporary life, and above all for eternal salvation, <... May we be delivered from the wiles of the devil and eternal torment, and may we inherit the endless and blessed kingdom of heaven. To her, O saints of God, do not stop those who pray for us, who flow to you in faith. For if we are worthy of your mercy because of the multitude of our sins and immeasurably, then do you, faithful imitators of God's love for mankind, so that we may bear fruits worthy of repentance and attain eternal rest, praising and blessing our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ, who is wonderful in His saints, and His Most Pure Mother, and your warm intercession, always, now, and always, and forever and ever. Amen to that."

Prayer to Potites of Gargar

"O holy servant of God, be a martyr! Having labored with a good deed on earth, you have perceived in heaven the crown of righteousness, and the Lord has prepared it for all who love Him. Looking at your holy image, we rejoice at the glorious end of your residence and honor your holy memory. But you, standing before the Throne of God, accept our supplications and offer them to the All-merciful God, that He may forgive us every sin and help us against the wiles of the devil, so that, having been delivered from sorrows, diseases, troubles and misfortunes, and all evil, we may live piously and righteously in our present age and be worthy of your intercession, even if we are unworthy. May you see the good in the lands of the living, glorifying God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever and ever. Amen to that."
