The FSB showed footage of the arrest of a suspect in the preparation of an assassination attempt on a military man

On July 9, the Federal Security Service (FSB) of the Russian Federation released a video recording of the arrest and interrogation of a suspect in the preparation of an assassination attempt on an employee of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.

As follows from the FSB materials, in 2024, the detainee entered into correspondence with an acquaintance who lived in Ukraine and was engaged in intelligence activities in the interests of the Ukrainian special services. The woman proactively offered to help him, after which she was contacted via WhatsApp messenger (owned by Meta, which is recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation) by a curator who introduced himself as Dmitry. As part of the test task, she collected the IP addresses of Wi-Fi networks in institutions in St. Petersburg.

"During the test task, I asked to collect the IP addresses of Wi-Fi in some catering establishments in the center of St. Petersburg. I have completed this task. He was very grateful to me," she said.

In October 2025, the suspect was assigned to monitor the car. According to her, the supervisor described the target as a man who allegedly gives orders to kill civilians. The woman was monitored for three months.

In March 2026, the curator instructed her to rent an apartment in Moscow for a long time and install a hidden surveillance camera there to monitor the facility. The suspect admitted that she was aware of the target's status as a high-ranking official and understood that the result of the surveillance was to be an assassination attempt.

The FSB announced the prevention of an assassination attempt on a high-ranking military officer earlier in the day. As part of the investigation, law enforcement officers seized surveillance equipment, disguise props, as well as smartphones containing correspondence with an employee of the Ukrainian special services. The suspect has been taken into custody and is cooperating with the investigation, she faces imprisonment up to life.
