The court in London refused to allow Nord Stream AG to recover insurance compensation
The High Court of London has denied insurance compensation to Nord Stream AG, the operator of the Nord Stream gas pipelines, in the case of the pipeline explosion. The relevant decision by Judge Claire Moulder was published on July 6 on the website of the commercial branch of the court.
In 2024, Nord Stream filed a lawsuit against the insurance companies Lloyd's of London and Arch Insurance because of their refusal to cover the damage after the explosions. The company demanded payment of €580 million.
According to the court decision, the damage to the pipelines in the form of ruptures and dents was directly or indirectly caused by the armed conflict or became its consequence. The court concluded that such damage was initially excluded from the insurance coverage.
Moulder stressed that in order to determine the liability of insurers, the court does not need to identify a specific perpetrator of the sabotage. According to the judge, the motives of the attackers in any case were dictated by military actions.
On July 2, the German Prosecutor General's Office confirmed the charge against a Ukrainian citizen in the case of the terrorist attack on the Nord Stream gas pipelines. The prosecutor's office reported that in 2022, Sergei K. served as an officer in the Ukrainian army. According to investigators, he, along with other Ukrainian soldiers, on behalf of the state structures of Ukraine, participated in the development of a plan to undermine the Nord Stream and Nord Stream –2 gas pipelines.
