- The Federation Council warned about the scheme of scammers with the "unsubscribe from mailing list" button
The attackers send fake promotional emails where the "unsubscribe" button contains a hidden link. When clicking on it, the user is asked to provide personal information, ostensibly to complete the unsubscription. This was announced on July 5 by Deputy Chairman of the Council for the Development of the Digital Economy at the Federation Council, Senator Artem Sheikin.
"This fraudulent scheme may look quite harmless: an email arrives that looks like a regular newsletter. There is a standard notification at the bottom: if you do not want to receive such messages, click on the "unsubscribe" button or follow the link. This link leads to a website with a form that can be called "unsubscribe", "spam complaint", "unsubscribe confirmation" or "address deletion form from the database," he said in an interview with TASS.
Sheikin noted that instead of a simple confirmation, they require you to provide personal information: full name, phone number, email address and other information. As a result, scammers receive not just an active e-mail, but more detailed information about a person, which they then use for phishing emails, calls, and personalized attacks.
According to him, the scheme is especially dangerous for corporate mail: during mass mailing, fraudsters can collect work addresses, positions, phone numbers and other official information, which they then use for their own purposes.
The senator noted that the key trick is that a person acts not out of fear, but out of irritation, trying to quickly unsubscribe.
Sheikin stressed that this unsubscription does not require passport data, phone number or other sensitive information, as e-mail or mail service settings are usually sufficient. He recommended deleting suspicious emails, marking them as spam, or checking the sender through the official website.
On July 4, Sheikin reported that fraudsters began using a new scheme to deceive Russians with mailings from a mobile operator allegedly about connecting a paid subscription and offering to disable it by phone, calling the code from the SMS. The senator noted that fraudsters in this scheme rely on the emotional reaction of the victim, who did not connect paid services and wants to get rid of them.
