Booker Prize to be renamed in honor of the Bukhman brothers from Vologda
The International Booker Prize for Literature will be named after Russian entrepreneurs Igor and Dmitry Bukhman brothers, natives of Vologda. This was announced on July 2 on the official website of the award.
"The Booker Prize Foundation is pleased to announce that the Bukhman Philanthropies charitable organization has generously provided funds to finance the International Booker Prize for the next 10 years, after supporting the prize in 2026. This announcement follows the 10th anniversary of the award in its current form this year, during which it has become the world's most influential award for translated fiction," the publication says.
It is noted that from 2027 the award will receive a new name — the Bukhman International Booker Prize. The Bukhman Philanthropies Foundation, founded by the Bukhman family, has committed to finance the award over the next ten years, allocating £1.4 million ($1.86 million) annually for this purpose. In addition, the prize pool for the winners is doubled to £100,000 ($134 thousand), which will be equally divided by the author and translator of the book.
"Supporting this award over the next decade is deeply personal to me. In a world increasingly defined by speed, distractions, and the rapid development of artificial intelligence, translated fiction urges us to slow down, listen, and understand lives unlike our own," Daria Bukhman, the businessman's wife and the foundation's co—founder, said in a statement.
In 2027, the jury will be headed by writer Katie Kitamura, who was previously shortlisted for the Booker Prize. Along with her, the laureates will be chosen by poet and Oxford professor Patrick McGuinness, director Caleb Azuma Nelson, Danish writer Olga Ravn and actress Tessa Thompson.
Arkeonews magazine reported on April 19 that archaeologists of the Spanish-Egyptian expedition led by the University of Barcelona and the Institute of Ancient Near East discovered a fragment of papyrus with the text of Homer's Iliad inside a mummy in the necropolis of the Roman period on the territory of the ancient city of Oxyrhynchus in the province of Minha. It was noted that scientists explored the necropolis, where mummies with amulets in the form of golden tongues and other funerary objects were found.
