- Lithuania intends to remove the ban on the deployment of nuclear weapons from the constitution
The ban on the deployment of weapons of mass destruction in Lithuania, including nuclear weapons, should be removed from the country's constitution. This was announced on June 30 by the candidate for Prime Minister and leader of the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania, Mindaugas Sinkevicius.
"I believe that for reasons of political correctness we should delete this ban from the constitution," TASS quoted Sinkevicius as saying.
Sinkevicius believes that the ban should be removed, since such provisions are not spelled out in the constitutions of neighboring states. He made this statement during a meeting with the parliamentary faction of the Union of Peasants and Greens of Lithuania.
On April 23, the Finnish Ministry of Defense announced that the government had submitted to parliament a proposal to allow the import and storage of nuclear weapons for the purpose of defending the country within the framework of cooperation with NATO. At the same time, the acquisition, production, development and research of nuclear weapons in the country will be prohibited.
Later, on June 17, the Finnish Parliament approved legislative amendments that lift the current ban on the import, manufacture, storage and use of nuclear weapons on the territory of the state.
