- Scientists have recorded the disintegration of a structure larger than Jupiter in the Sun
The Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences has published a video showing the disintegration of a large spot on the surface of the Sun. The footage was posted on the laboratory's Telegram channel on June 29.
According to scientists, the monolithic structure, which exceeded the size of the planet Jupiter, gradually disintegrates into separate fragments and "goes" into the solar plasma.
"A monolithic structure larger than the planet Jupiter is breaking up into pieces and 'sinking' into the solar ocean," the video's description says.
Experts also noted the appearance of a new active area north of the solar equator. According to their data, two large active centers are currently being observed on the Sun, one of which is the largest this year.
Scientists warn that with a possible outbreak of level X in the next 2-3 days, there is a possibility of a frontal impact on the Earth. At the same time, as specified, both active areas remain calm for the time being.
On June 28, researchers recorded the largest group of spots on the Sun in 2026. It was noted that the group of 4,366 spots recorded in February was previously a record in 2026. It caused a powerful X8.1 class flare, and its maximum area reached 1,100 units.
