Two members of Basayev's gang were convicted of attacking paratroopers in 2000.

The Southern District Military Court has sentenced two members of Shamil Basayev's gang who took part in the attack on Pskov paratroopers in Chechnya in 2000. This was reported on June 29 by the FSB Public Relations Center.

"The Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation, in the course of joint work with the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, has formed an irrefutable evidence base for the participation in this crime of Russian citizens, residents of the city of Novy Urengoy, Yamalo—Nenets Autonomous District, Rasul Koshmanbetov, born in 1977, and the village of Kayasula, Stavropol Territory, Arslal Taushev, born in 1973, who were not criminally punished for this," the statement said..

According to the court's decision, Koshmanbetov was sentenced to 24 years in prison, and Taushev to 23 years, while the defendants will serve their sentences in high—security penal colonies.

It is noted that both convicts were detained back in August 2020. They were charged under articles on banditry, armed rebellion and encroachment on the life of military personnel, and later a preventive measure in the form of detention was chosen against the defendants.

In addition, 37 members of the Basayev and Khattab gangs were brought to criminal responsibility during the joint work of law enforcement agencies. The attack on the Pskov paratroopers took place in February 2000 near the village of Ulus-Kert. As a result, 84 soldiers were killed.

The Southern District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don also found two members of armed formations guilty on June 24 of attacking 6th Company paratroopers in Chechnya in 2000. The court found that the defendants were members of the Nogai Jamaat armed group (recognized as terrorist and banned in the Russian Federation), which operated in the formation of Shamil Basayev and Emir Khattab.
