Every year on July 8, Russia celebrates the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity, dedicated to the day of memory of Saints Peter and Fevronia of Murom, patrons of marriage and family well—being. Orthodox traditions, folk signs and customs are associated with the holiday, many of which have survived to the present day. What is customary to do on this day and what prohibitions our ancestors adhered to — in the material of Izvestia.

When is Peter and Fevronia Day celebrated in 2026?

The Memorial Day of the Blessed Prince Peter and Princess Fevronia of Murom is celebrated annually on July 8. In 2026, the holiday falls on a Wednesday. This date remains unchanged, as it belongs to the number of non-recurring church holidays. On the same day, Russia celebrates the state Day of Family, Love and Fidelity, established in memory of the holy spouses.

The Russian Orthodox Church canonized Peter and Fevronia in the 16th century after the church Council of 1547. Today, their relics are located in the Holy Trinity Convent in Murom, which annually becomes one of the main centers of celebration.

In modern Russia, the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity was established in 2008. The symbol of the holiday was the daisy, a flower that is associated with purity, loyalty and sincere feelings.

Why are Peter and Fevronia considered patrons of family and marriage

Saints Peter and Fevronia are revered by Orthodox believers as patrons of the family, conjugal love and fidelity. The reason for this was their life, in which the spouses are presented as an example of mutual respect, support and devotion to each other.

According to the old Russian "Tale of Peter and Fevronia of Murom," Prince Peter fell seriously ill. A simple peasant girl, Fevronia, known for her wisdom and knowledge of medicinal herbs, was able to heal him. In gratitude, the prince promised to marry her, but at first he did not keep his word. After his illness returned, he turned to Fevronia again, and then fulfilled his promise.

After the wedding, the couple had to face the resistance of the Murom boyars, who did not want to see a woman of low birth as a princess. Peter refused to leave his wife and left the city with her. Later, the residents of Murom themselves asked the spouses to return, as the troubles began in the principality.

Peter and Fevronia lived a long life in love and harmony, and at an advanced age they took monastic vows. They prayed to die on the same day, and their wish came true. After the death of the couple, as befits monks, they were buried separately, but the next day their bodies miraculously turned out to be together.

That is why Saints Peter and Fevronia are addressed with prayers for the creation of a strong family, the preservation of marriage, mutual understanding between spouses and the well-being of children.

What traditions were observed on the Day of Peter and Fevronia in Russia

In Russia, this day was considered a time of family unity and peace in the home. People tried to spend the holiday with their relatives, avoiding conflicts and hard work unnecessarily.

The main tradition was to attend divine services. Believers came to the temple to pray to Saints Peter and Fevronia for the well-being of the family, the health of loved ones and a happy marriage. Unmarried girls and unmarried boys asked to meet their significant other.

After the service, the families gathered at a common table. The holiday falls on the period of St. Peter's Fast, so the housewives prepared lean dishes.

Special attention was paid to spouses who had lived together for many years. They were invited to festive events, considering them an example of a strong family. In many villages, newlyweds came to elderly married couples for a blessing.

Some folk customs are also associated with the holiday. For example, it was considered a good omen to spend the day with your spouse or lover, go for a walk or do household chores together.

What can you do on a holiday of family, love and fidelity?

The Orthodox Church recommends devoting this day to prayer, communion with loved ones and good deeds. Believers visit the temple, place candles in front of the icons of Saints Peter and Fevronia, thank them for their family well-being and ask for help in strengthening relationships.

The holiday is considered a favorable time for reconciliation after quarrels, sincere conversations and the restoration of relations between relatives. Many families try to get together, organize a lunch together, or spend a day in nature.

In recent years, it has become a tradition in Russia to marry on July 8th. Despite the fact that the date often coincides with St. Peter's Fast, when the Orthodox Church does not perform the sacrament of marriage, the state registration of marriage in the registry office is carried out in the usual manner. In this case, the wedding is usually postponed until after the end of the fast.

On the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity, it is also customary to give daisies, congratulate spouses, parents, children and everyone who is dear to a person. Many cities host concerts, festivals, charity events, and award ceremonies for families who have been married for several decades.

What not to do on Peter and Fevronia Day

There are no strict church prohibitions related exclusively to this holiday. However, since Saints' Day usually falls on the time of Peter's Fast, believers are advised to observe the restrictions established by the church charter.

According to popular beliefs, on this day one should not quarrel, sort things out, utter insults and wish others harm. It was believed that any family conflicts that arose on July 8 could permanently disrupt the peace in the house.

It was also not recommended to refuse help to those in need, to show greed or indifference. Such actions, according to popular beliefs, could lead to family troubles.

In the old days, women tried not to do heavy field work if it could be rescheduled for another day. Instead, they spent more time at home, with children, and with their loved ones.

The Church reminds us that various fortune-telling, conspiracies and superstitious rituals are not related to the Orthodox tradition and are not welcome.

Folk signs for the Day of Peter and Fevronia

On the Day of Peter and Fevronia in Russia, they paid attention to weather signs related primarily to the weather and the future harvest.

It was believed that if the weather was hot and sunny on July 8, then such heat could persist for about 40 more days. Rain on this day, on the contrary, was perceived as a harbinger of a rich harvest of honey and mushrooms.

If there was heavy dew in the morning, the peasants expected a good harvest of vegetables. The large number of flowers in the meadows was also considered an auspicious sign.

Special attention was paid to the behavior of birds. If the swallows were flying low above the ground, they expected bad weather soon. The clear starry sky in the evening promised steady warm weather.

To this day, one of the most famous folk traditions has been preserved: it is believed that a marriage proposal made on the Day of Peter and Fevronia promises a strong and happy union. Although such beliefs have nothing to do with church teaching, the holiday remains a symbol of love, mutual respect and family well-being. Every year on July 8, it unites millions of people, reminding them of the value of a strong family, loyalty and responsibility to each other.

Earlier, Priest Ilya Savastyanov told Izvestia which nuts are consecrated in churches on Walnut Savior Day.
