Remote scammers have started using a new deception scheme aimed at intimidating citizens and extorting funds. This was announced on June 28 by the Russian Interior Ministry.

According to the agency, the attackers pose as employees of special services or government agencies and, under various pretexts, convince the victim to transfer money allegedly to verify their authenticity. At the same time, they promise to return the funds after completing the "verification".

"Then, in order to continue communication and lure out more funds, the person is told that traces of drugs and extraneous fingerprints have been found on the money, and the check will continue," the ministry's materials are available to TASS.

Under pressure and in a state of panic, citizens provide personal data, after which the attackers steal additional funds.

The ministry called on citizens to be vigilant and not transfer money and personal information to third parties posing as employees of government agencies.

On June 25, the Interior Ministry warned about a scheme of fuel fraud by appointment and coupons. According to the ministry, the scammers offer to arrange for fuel without waiting in line. To do this, the user is asked to enter a phone number linked to Telegram and a confirmation code on the website, after which the attackers gain access to the account.
