Charles III refused to live in Buckingham Palace
King Charles III of Great Britain and his wife, Queen Camilla, will not return to Buckingham Palace after many years of renovation, thereby violating a long-standing tradition. This was reported on June 25 by the online edition of The Daily Beast (DB).
"They (Charles III and Camilla. — Ed.) officially stated that they would never move to Buckingham Palace. <...> Announcement <...> is a seismic moment that breaks the tradition started by Queen Victoria, his (acting monarch. — Ed.) great—great-grandmother," the article says.
The couple moved out of Buckingham Palace back in 2022, as renovation began there. All this time they lived at Windsor Castle and Clarence House. Now they do not plan to follow the established tradition and occupy the renovated building. According to their report, it will remain a place for official receptions and the main working center of the entire royal court.
Buckingham Palace has been occupied by reigning monarchs since Queen Victoria moved there in 1837 at the age of 18.
The News newspaper learned on March 2 that Charles III offered a 30-room residence to Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle, thereby making a significant gesture in their direction. It was noted that the facility was located in Windsor and was a sign to the couple that the doors to Britain were always open for them.
