The US Geological Survey has predicted strong aftershocks in Venezuela.

Aftershocks after the earthquakes that occurred in Venezuela can last from several months to a year. This was announced on June 25 by William Barnhart, Assistant Coordinator of the United States Geological Survey Earthquake Hazard Program.

"After this earthquake, the tremors are likely to last from several months to a year," Barnhart said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

According to him, individual aftershocks can be powerful enough to cause serious damage and lead to even more damage. At the same time, the expert noted that over time, the frequency and magnitude of aftershocks are likely to decrease.

The earthquake in Venezuela occurred on June 24. The epicenter was located 60 km northwest of the city of Valencia, as well as 28 km northeast of San Felipe. The magnitude of the natural disaster was estimated at 7.5. The earthquake was the strongest in the country since 1900.

According to the latest data, at least 164 people were killed and more than 900 injured as a result of the earthquake. The state of La Guaira became the most affected by the earthquake.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova noted that the Russian side is currently exploring the possibility of providing humanitarian assistance to Venezuela. According to her, Russian diplomats are in constant contact with the authorities and emergency services of the republic.
