Rosatom to build Russia's largest nuclear fuel reprocessing plant
Rosatom State Corporation is developing a project for Russia's largest spent nuclear fuel (SNF) reprocessing and recycling of nuclear materials for their further use in the nuclear power industry, including fourth-generation power systems. This was announced on June 23 on the website of the organization's press service.
Rosatom is launching a project to create a new enterprise to solve problems in the field of nuclear fuel cycle closure," the report says.
According to the state corporation, the enterprise will become a key element in the development of two-component nuclear energy with a closed nuclear fuel cycle, involving the joint operation of fast neutron reactors and thermal reactors.
An investment justification is currently underway, within the framework of which the construction site will be determined. The decision on the location of the new production facility is planned to be made by the end of this year, taking into account logistical, environmental and production factors.
The project provides for a modular structure of the enterprise with the possibility of a phased expansion of capacities. The capacity of the first module will be 400 tons of fuel per year. After reaching its design capacity, the plant will become the largest Russian spent nuclear fuel reprocessing complex and will be able to work with both thermal and fast neutron reactors.
Rosatom notes that the creation of a large-scale nuclear recycling infrastructure will provide the nuclear industry with raw materials for the production of new fuels.
Alexey Likhachev, head of the Rosatom State Corporation, said on April 21 that Rosatom's priority task was to start up, connect to the grid and provide electricity at the first unit of the Akkuyu NPP. According to him, the Turkish contractors and Rosatom will do everything to make this year the year Turkey acquires nuclear energy.
