Within the next month from the moment of thrombosis, there is a 6% risk that the blood clot will break off, enter the pulmonary artery and lead to death. Igor Zolotukhin, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Faculty Surgery No. 1 at Pirogov University, told about this on June 23.

"Of course, this is a high risk. But this is a risk for someone who has not received treatment for thrombosis, who did not apply immediately as soon as his leg became ill and swollen. That's why all doctors say the same thing: the sooner you come back after symptoms appear, the higher your chances of a good outcome," he said in an interview withГазета.Ru ".

With timely access to a specialist and the start of taking anticoagulants, the likelihood of death decreases dramatically. According to research data, only one out of 2.5 thousand — 3 thousand patients dies during treatment over the next year.

The doctor compares the development of deep vein thrombosis with a "silent catastrophe", which becomes such solely because of the patient's delay or the hope of self-medication.

"Moreover, it is important to understand that none of us is immune from the risk of deep vein thrombosis. And the older a person gets, the higher these risks are," Zolotukhin said.

The professor emphasizes that thrombosis itself is not a primary disease, but a consequence of other health problems. The balance of the blood coagulation system is disrupted by external factors, such as cancer or surgery. The more severe the underlying disease, the more likely it is that deadly blood clots will form.

Professor Pavel Vorobyov, Chairman of the Moscow City Scientific Society of Therapists, told how to protect yourself from blood clots on June 18. He noted that long-term air travel can increase the risk of blood clots even in healthy people. To prevent thrombosis during the flight, the specialist recommends following three rules: drink more water, since the dry air in the cabin contributes to dehydration, regularly move or stretch your legs, and, if necessary, in consultation with your doctor, use medications to improve venous blood flow or preventative doses of anticoagulants.

In May, cardiovascular surgeon, phlebologist, Ph.D. Gevorg Mnatsakanyan told how thrombosis of superficial and deep veins manifests itself and at what point it is necessary to consult a specialist. According to him, deep vein thrombosis is considered the most dangerous, which can occur with almost no symptoms or be accompanied by severe swelling, pain, muscle tension and limited leg mobility. At the first signs of thrombosis, you should immediately consult a vascular surgeon, phlebologist, or general surgeon. 360.ru .
