The candidate for Prime Minister of Lithuania declared the inevitability of universal conscription

Lithuania needs universal military conscription, as every citizen must participate in ensuring the security of the state. This was announced on June 22 by the leader of the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania and the future Prime Minister of the country, Mindaugas Sinkevicius.

"Universal conscription is an integral element of the country's security. Why can't it be? I think it can. <...> Every citizen of this country should try to participate in greater security. If we are better prepared, I think we will live more calmly, we will feel more confident," the politician said in an interview with the Delfi portal.

Sinkevicius noted that at the moment he is not ready to discuss the specific parameters of the initiative, but expressed confidence in the inevitability of this step. According to him, the Lithuanian authorities will come to implement this measure in the future.

The politician clarified that the timing and technical base remain the key issue, since the introduction of conscription requires the training of infrastructure and instructors, and not just a political decision. At the same time, the future head of the Lithuanian government believes that the relevant decision will be made with the current composition of the parliament.

On April 23, the Lithuanian parliament unanimously approved a law on the expansion of a military training ground near the town of Taurage, located near the border of the Kaliningrad region. According to Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas, this decision was made due to the changed security situation.

On the same day, the Russian Security Council announced that Lithuania's military and political leadership was continuing its course towards further militarization of the country, creating a hotbed of tension near the borders of the Kaliningrad region. It is specified that the ceremony of awarding the battle banner of the newly formed 1st Lithuanian division took place in the city of Ukmerge.
