Luxembourg's MEP Fernand Kartheiser, in a conversation with Izvestia on June 16, said he considered the checks launched against him to be an attempt to end any contacts between the European Parliament and Russia.

The day before, the media reported that the head of the European Parliament, Robert Metsola, demanded to check Kartheiser's violation of the code of conduct. She wrote a letter in which she accused the politician of incorrectly notifying about her meetings with representatives of Russia.

At the same time, Western journalists recognized Kartheiser's intentions to strengthen parliamentary diplomacy through such contacts with the Russian Federation in order to achieve a settlement of the conflict in Ukraine.

"I think this is a very strange procedure. Today I received [the letter] through intermediaries, but I have not received it officially until now," he said.

The MP also noted the contradictions within the European Union: while some structures advocate the restoration of dialogue with the Russian Federation, others thwart any, even informal, attempts at conversation.

In addition, the European Parliament uses only sanctions and condemnation instead of diplomacy, he added. At the same time, there are those who understand the need for dialogue with Moscow, but are afraid to openly express their position.

"There are many such people, but they do not speak out openly, because, of course, the pressure that is being put on parliamentarians here is enormous. <...> The European Parliament and the EU are in complete isolation — they are the only ones in the whole world who do not talk to Russians. It's surreal," Kartheiser concluded.

Kartheiser also noted that the European Union needs to continue its dialogue with Russia, especially in the framework of a possible settlement of the Ukrainian conflict. In his opinion, the European Parliament is acting extremely radically: parliamentarians regularly adopt resolutions with harsh condemnations and make absolutely no attempt to find a diplomatic language.
