In case of heat stroke, the animal's brain, liver, kidneys and heart may suffer without timely help. Elena Frolenko, a veterinarian at SUPERPET, a manufacturer of natural diets, warned about this on Wednesday, June 10.

"The first signs are usually rapid breathing, severe shortness of breath, excessive salivation, lethargy, anxiety, redness of the mucous membranes. In more severe cases, vomiting, impaired coordination, seizures, and loss of consciousness occur. Then you need to go to the vet clinic immediately," the specialist explained in an interview with Lenta.Ru .

Frolenko warned that if a pet is conscious and just breathing heavily, first of all you need to move it to a cool place: in a room with air conditioning, a fan or in deep shade.

"The main mistake in heat stroke is to try to cool the animal sharply with ice water or cover it with ice, because this can cause vascular spasm and worsen the condition," explained the veterinarian.

She advised washing the pet's stomach, groin area, armpits and paws with cool water, putting wet towels on it and giving it a little water. When the condition stabilizes, the animal can be taken to the veterinarian.
