In the UK, images of figures from the past on banknotes have been abandoned.
The Bank of England has updated the design of banknotes, replacing the images of former Prime Minister Winston Churchill, writer Jane Austen and mathematician Alan Turing, as these personalities are controversial and contradictory. The Telegraph newspaper writes about this on June 6.
"The Bank of England removed such historical figures from banknotes after it was said that they were "elitist and contradictory personalities," the publication says.
According to a study commissioned by the bank, Churchill, Turing and Austin are controversial and do not represent the cultural and natural diversity of Great Britain. The image of historical figures was considered a backward vision of the country.
Victorian-era landmarks and even the white cliffs of Dover, which can be associated with borders and political statements, have also been criticized.
The administration of US President Donald Trump has recently announced that they want to create a commemorative banknote with a face value of $250 with the image of the current head of state. One of the layouts provides for the image of the president in the center of the banknote next to the autographs of Trump himself and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant.
