Hungary has agreed on the first negotiation cluster on Ukraine's accession to the EU
Hungary has agreed to open the first negotiation cluster within the framework of Ukraine's accession to the European Union (EU) after reaching agreements with Kiev on the rights of the Hungarian national minority in Transcarpathia. This was announced on June 4 by Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar.
According to the head of government, Budapest and Kiev have managed to work out a comprehensive agreement providing for the expansion of linguistic, educational, cultural and political rights of ethnic Hungarians living in Ukraine.
"Ukraine's commitments will also be reflected in the action plan that Ukraine will submit to the European Union. If this happens, the Hungarian government will agree to open the first negotiation cluster on Ukraine as part of the EU accession process," Magyar wrote on his Facebook page (owned by Meta, a company recognized as extremist in Russia).
It is clarified that after reaching agreements, Hungary, at the level of permanent representatives of the EU countries, supported the launch of the first stage of the negotiation process with Ukraine.
At the same time, Budapest still opposes Ukraine's accelerated accession to the EU. According to the Prime Minister, the final decision on supporting Kiev's membership should be made taking into account the opinion of Hungarian citizens.
On June 3, Magyar proposed Hungary as a place for negotiations on Ukraine. At the same time, Magyar noted that the issues of ensuring security guarantees for Kiev are outside the competence of Hungary. In his opinion, only the international community can assume such obligations.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, responding to a question from Izvestia on May 29, said that Europe could not mediate in negotiations on a settlement in Ukraine, as it was itself one of the parties to the conflict. He also noted that peace in Ukraine would come faster if all states refused to supply weapons to Kiev.
