- The first genetically identical quadruplets in Russia were discharged in St. Petersburg.
On Children's Day in St. Petersburg, Russia's first genetically identical four girls were discharged from the hospital. This was announced on June 1 on the website of the city governor's administration.
The family of Yuri Filippov and Maria Makarenko was personally congratulated by the Governor of St. Petersburg, Alexander Beglov. The girls were born on April 2, and the probability of having such a monochoric tetraamiotic quadruplet is about one in 17 million.
It is reported that a team of 32 doctors from maternity hospital No. 17, Children's City Hospital No. 1 and the Mariinsky Hospital participated in the delivery. According to Anton Mikhailov, the chief physician of maternity hospital No. 17, three specialists were assigned to each child in the operating room.
At birth, the babies' weight ranged from 1,360 to 1,640 grams, but by the time they were discharged, each of the girls had gained up to 3,300 grams. During the two months of their stay in medical institutions, the children passed the stage of intensive care and neonatal pathology, where they learned to breathe and eat independently.
"Today we have a special reason to be happy. We're sending four little Petersburgers home at once. This is a great professional feat of our doctors. Today Anya, Sonya, Vasilisa and Nastya are healthy, stronger and ready to go home. I sincerely congratulate my parents and wish them good health and patience. The city is always nearby," said Alexander Beglov.
The children's mother Maria Makarenko confessed in an interview with the TV channel 78.ru that for a long time she did not give her daughters names because of fears for their lives. The family did not immediately find out that there would be four children — at first the doctors reported triplets.
"I was very surprised and I still don't believe it! I look and I don't believe it. I felt dizzy, and the couch I was lying on began to spin beneath me. It was both creepy and fun," Maria Makarenko shared.
She added that her husband was also shocked by the news, and the preparation for childbirth took place in secrecy.
"Throughout my pregnancy, we didn't even tell anyone that I was pregnant, I was afraid of losing it early. From the 28th week, we started thinking that maybe everything would work out," said a mother with many children.
According to Maria, she still cannot visually distinguish her daughters from each other, so she uses a system of colored labels.
"I can make out the first one, Anechka, she's somehow rounder, she has bigger cheeks. They have no children. — Ed.) the threads on the hand are multicolored. Anya has a green thread, Sofia has a yellow thread, Vasilisa has a blue thread, and Anastasia has a red thread, the youngest," she said.
The family has already received the status of a large family and all the required regional payments. The authorities will provide parents with federal and regional maternity capital, as well as a plot of land.
The family was assigned a social supervisor and a babysitter. Additionally, the governor handed the couple the keys to a Lada Largus car equipped with four child seats.
The press service of maternity hospital No. 17 reported on April 5 that the first Russian case of the birth of identical quadruplets was recorded in St. Petersburg. The maternity hospital stressed that the achieved result was made possible thanks to the proper management of pregnancy and the professionalism of the medical staff. Immediately after the birth, each of the girls was assisted by neonatologists and nurses, providing the necessary care.
