Youth Day is one of the most popular and vibrant summer holidays in Russia, bringing together schoolchildren, students, and young professionals. In 2026, concerts, festivals, educational forums, and sporting events will be held across the country on June 27. About the history of the holiday and its traditions — in the material of Izvestia.

What kind of holiday is Youth Day in Russia?

Youth Day in Russia is an official holiday dedicated to the country's younger generation, their achievements, initiatives and participation in public life. Every year on this day, concerts, festivals, educational forums, sports competitions and patriotic actions are held in Russian cities. The holiday brings together schoolchildren, students, young professionals, volunteers, entrepreneurs and representatives of youth organizations.

Today, Youth Day is considered one of the largest summer holidays in the country. In many regions, events are held at several venues at once — in parks, on embankments, central streets and city squares. The program usually includes performances by artists, lectures, workshops, job fairs, meetings with entrepreneurs and public figures.

In recent years, the format of the holiday has changed significantly. While in the Soviet period it was closely linked to the ideology and activities of the Komsomol, now the main focus is on the development of youth initiatives, career opportunities, technology, and sports. Increasingly, the program includes educational events, discussions about entrepreneurship, science, media, and the digital industry.

Youth Day is not an official non-working holiday, but in some regions the events last for several days and gather tens of thousands of participants. Regional authorities, educational institutions, youth movements and public organizations are traditionally involved in the organization of the holiday.

When is Youth Day celebrated in 2026

In Russia, Youth Day is officially celebrated on the last Saturday of June. In 2026, the holiday falls on June 27.

This procedure has been in effect since 2023. Before that, the holiday was celebrated annually on June 27, regardless of the day of the week. However, later the date was made "floating" so that the main events would take place on a day off and more people could take part in them.

The corresponding decree was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin in May 2023. The document fixed the celebration of Youth Day on the last Saturday of June.

In 2026, the main holiday programs in the Russian regions are scheduled for June 27.

Open-air festivals, concerts, youth forums and sporting events are traditionally held in major cities on this day. Some venues start thematic programs a few days before the official date.

The history of the Youth Day holiday

The history of Youth Day in Russia dates back to the Soviet era. The holiday was established in 1958 by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. At that time it was called Soviet Youth Day and was celebrated on the last Sunday of June.

The appearance of the holiday was associated with the state policy of youth support and the active development of the Komsomol movement. In Soviet times, sports competitions, youth marches, concerts, activist meetings and mass celebrations were held on this day. In many cities, dance parties, contests and festive programs were organized at outdoor venues.

At the same time, the holiday had an earlier predecessor — International Youth Day, which was celebrated in the USSR from 1917 to 1945. It was held in late August and early September and was associated with the international youth movement.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the holiday has been preserved in modern Russia. In 1993, the first president of Russia, Boris Yeltsin, signed an order according to which Youth Day was officially fixed on June 27.

Despite the fixed date, in many regions the main events continued to be held on weekends, as June 27 often fell on weekdays. As a result, in 2023, the format of the celebration was officially changed, returning to the weekend system — the last Saturday in June.

In recent years, Youth Day has become part of a broader government youth policy. Forums, volunteer projects, and educational platforms for young people are actively developing in the country. One of the largest youth events in recent years has become the World Youth Festival, which is supported by the state.

Traditions and how to celebrate Youth Day

Mass urban events remain the main tradition of Youth Day. Concerts, festivals, sports tournaments and entertainment programs are organized in almost all regions of the country at the end of June.

Open-air youth festivals have become one of the most popular formats in recent years. Such venues host performances by musical performers, dance battles, extreme sports competitions, esports tournaments and creative workshops.

Special attention is paid to educational events. On Youth Day, lectures, career forums and meetings with representatives of business and science are held in many cities. Young people can learn about internship opportunities, grant support, and the development of their own projects.

Sports events remain another important part of the holiday. The program often includes bike rides, football and basketball tournaments, mass training sessions and street sports competitions.

In recent years, the popularity of volunteer and environmental actions has been growing. Youth organizations organize charity marathons, clean-up days, aid collections and social projects. In addition, many museums, theaters and cultural centers organize special programs and free events for young people on this day.

The largest festive events are traditionally held in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Yekaterinburg and other major cities. In the capital, the main venues are usually located at VDNKh, Gorky Park, and city embankments.

The holiday ends, as a rule, with evening concerts and performances by popular artists. Light shows and fireworks displays are being organized in several regions.

Who is being congratulated on this day

The main characters of the holiday are considered to be young people — schoolchildren, students, aspiring professionals, young families, athletes, volunteers and representatives of youth organizations.

According to Russian legislation, young people are citizens aged 14 to 35 years inclusive. Most youth programs and events are focused on this age group.

On Youth Day, congratulations are received by university and college students, young scientists, entrepreneurs, representatives of creative professions and participants in social movements. In many regions, the achievements of young doctors, teachers, engineers and other specialists are separately celebrated.

Congratulations on this day are often addressed to those who work with young people: teachers, mentors, coaches, organizers of educational and social projects.

Traditionally, representatives of federal and regional authorities, public figures, athletes and artists address young people. Congratulations usually emphasize the importance of the younger generation for the development of the country, economy, science, culture and technology.

On this day, words of congratulations and support for the younger generation are heard throughout the country. They are addressed to those who are just starting their journey, studying, building a career, developing projects and shaping the future.
