Estonian Foreign Minister opposes EU mediation in negotiations on Ukraine
Europe should not mediate in negotiations on the conflict in Ukraine. This was announced on May 25 by Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna.
"The role of mediator implies taking a neutral position to begin the search for a compromise between Ukraine and Russia. This is absolutely not our goal. Our goal is to determine, and someday, if negotiations take place, to defend what the future security architecture of Europe will look like," the ERR TV channel quotes him as saying.
On May 18, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, speaking to reporters, refused to mediate during negotiations on Ukraine between Russia and the EU. In her opinion, only current heads of state and government can participate in such negotiations, since negotiations with Moscow require intermediaries with real "political power."
