A criminal case has been opened after a boat crash on Lake Baikal in Buryatia.

Investigators have opened a criminal case into the wreck of a boat on Lake Baikal in Buryatia. This was reported on May 19 by the Investigative Committee (IC) of Russia.

"A criminal case has been opened on the grounds of a crime under Part 3 of Article 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Provision of services that do not meet the requirements for the safety of life and health of consumers, which negligently caused the death of more than two persons")," the Maks messenger says.

It is specified that investigators and criminologists are working at the scene. They are conducting an inspection of the territory and investigative actions necessary to establish the circumstances of the incident. A complex of forensic examinations has been assigned to the case.

A boat with passengers capsized on Lake Baikal earlier that day. A source from Izvestia reported that four people died in the boat crash. The Ministry of Health of the republic added that 10 people were injured in the incident. Their condition is assessed as satisfactory, and hospitalization was not required. Later it became known that the death toll had increased to five.

According to updated information, there were 18 people on board. One woman also received a laceration to her leg, she was hospitalized in a medical facility. Previously, the cause of the emergency could be overloading.
