93-year-old accused in the Rwandan genocide case has died in The Hague.

Felicien Kabuga, accused of organizing the genocide in Rwanda, died at the age of 94 in a hospital in The Hague. The relevant information was published on the official website of the International Residual Mechanism for UN Criminal Tribunals on May 17.

Kabuga was in the custody of an international organization at the time of his death. The President of the UN Court, Judge Graciela Gatti Santana, ordered a full investigation into the circumstances of the defendant's death.

Kabuga was considered one of the main defendants in the case of the events in Rwanda. The investigation suspected him of organizing mass killings, inciting them and committing crimes against humanity. The arrest warrant for the accused was issued back in 2013, but it was possible to detain him only seven years later.

In 2020, Kabuga, who had been hiding for 20 years, was discovered in France, after which he was transported to The Hague. The trial against Kabuga began in the fall of 2022. Later, the hearing was suspended indefinitely, as the court found the man unable to participate in the meetings due to dementia and general health.
