Xabi Alonso appointed head coach of Chelsea FC
Spaniard Xabi Alonso has been appointed head coach of English football club Chelsea. This was announced on May 17 on the team's page on the social network X (ex. Twitter).
"Chelsea Football Club is pleased to announce the appointment of Xabi Alonso as the head coach of the men's team," the statement said.
Under the terms of the agreement, which runs until 2030, the coach will take up his duties on July 1.
Alonso's last job was at Real Madrid, which he managed from the beginning of the current season until January 12. During this period, the Spanish club under his leadership played 34 matches, in which they won 24, lost six times and drew four times.
Before moving to Madrid, Alonso had been coaching Bayer since October 2022. In the 2023/24 season, the Leverkusen club won the German championship, Cup and Super Cup for the first time in its history. The team also reached the final of the Europa League, where they lost to the Italian Atalanta with a score of 0.:3. In May 2024, the team set a record for the longest unbeaten streak since the founding of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA).
Earlier in his coaching career, Alonso led the reserve team of the Spanish Real Sociedad and the youth team of Real Madrid. As a player, the Spaniard represented Real Sociedad, Eibar, Real Madrid, English Liverpool and German Bayern Munich. He won the Champions League twice, and as a member of the Spanish national team he became the winner of the World Cup and a two-time winner of the European Championship.
London Chelsea FC fired Liam Rosenior as head coach on April 22 after losing for the fifth time in a row in the English Premier League (Premier League). The club representatives thanked the specialist and his staff for the work done.
