The opposition right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has set a new historical record of popularity among German voters — 29%. This was reported on May 16 by the Bild newspaper with reference to the results of a survey conducted by the INSA sociological institute.

"The AdG rating has risen to a record 29%. At the same time, the CDU/CSU bloc continues to lose its position, its support has decreased to 22%. The SPD is now gaining only 12%," the publication says.

Since the parliamentary elections that took place on February 23, 2025, Alternative for Germany has gained more than eight percentage points — then its result was 20.8%. Thus, the party has completely reversed the previous gap with the CDU/CSU in its favor.

Among other political organizations, the Greens demonstrated growth, with their rating rising to a two-year high of 14%. At the same time, support for the Leftist party, according to the results of the study, decreased to 10%.

As Herman Binkert, head of INSA, explained, the German political landscape is undergoing fundamental changes: the AFD has become the strongest force on the right-of-center spectrum, and the Greens have led the center-left camp.

"If this trend continues, then in the future the electoral struggle in Germany will be fought between two poles — the AFD and the Greens," predicts Binkert.

Kirill Dmitriev, the special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation for investment and economic cooperation with foreign countries, as well as the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), said yesterday that the AfG had become a "hope" for the Germans. He commented on the publication of Alice Weidel, co—chairman of the AFD, which reported an increase in the party's rating to 36% in the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Bild reported on April 25 that the AfD had gained 28% of the support vote, continuing to lead in popularity among German parties and updating its rating record. At the same time, the AFD is four percentage points ahead of the ruling CDU party of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
