The doctor listed the foci of hantavirus in Russia
The Far East, Krasnodar Territory, the Urals, Western Siberia and the European part of the country are natural foci of hantavirus in Russia. This was announced on May 16 by Yulia Ermolaeva, an infectious disease specialist, an employee of the Institute of Medicine and Medical Technologies at Novosibirsk State University.
"The main natural foci in Russia: Primorsky Krai, the Far East, the European part of Russia, Krasnodar Krai, the Urals and Western Siberia," she told TASS.
Ermolaeva noted that the outbreak of the disease on a cruise ship in 2026 and cases of infection imported to Thailand from South America confirm the circulation of hantaviruses around the world. She stressed that travelers may encounter different serotypes of the pathogen when traveling.
The doctor explained that hantavirus infection is hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. Ermolaeva added that this is a natural focal disease. It exists in certain landscapes where infected rodents that carry the virus live.
Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Gennady Onishchenko reported on May 14 that voles and mice are the main vectors of hantavirus in Russia. According to him, with this disease, the pathogen persists among certain animal species or vectors in nature, and when in contact with humans, it can cause infection.
