- Trump announced plans to discuss with the Chinese leader the issue of supplying Taiwan with US weapons.
On May 11, US President Donald Trump announced plans to discuss further sales of American weapons to Taiwan with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his upcoming visit to China.
"I will discuss this with President Xi. He doesn't want us to do that. Let's discuss it. This is one of the many things that we will discuss," Trump said in response to a question about possible arms supplies to Taiwan from the United States.
The American leader also spoke about plans to discuss energy issues and the current situation around Iran. The head of the White House stressed that he has excellent relations with Xi Jinping and expressed confidence that the Chinese leader respects him.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said on the same day that Beijing was ready to work with Washington to resolve differences and expand cooperation during Trump's upcoming visit. He stressed that China is ready to cooperate with the United States "on the basis of equality, respect and mutual benefit."
On May 11, the Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed the American leader's state visit to the country, which is scheduled for May 13-15. White House administration spokeswoman Anna Kelly said yesterday that during a visit to China to meet with the Chinese president on May 14-15, the US president intends to stabilize relations between the two countries.
