Rospotrebnadzor explained the new rules for charges for online subscriptions

Online services and digital platforms will no longer be able to debit money from users after unsubscribing using previously saved payment data. This was reported on the website of Rospotrebnadzor on May 11.

"Currently, Internet platforms offer to purchase subscriptions to various online services, the fee for which is often charged automatically and after the expiration of the contract," the agency said in a statement.

It is clarified that a new clause has been introduced into the law "On Consumer Rights Protection" prohibiting the use of old payment data for periodic debits if the consumer had previously refused to use them.

The changes relate to paid subscription services such as online cinemas, cloud storage, document management services, and other digital platforms that operate on a subscription model. Companies are required to provide the opportunity to unsubscribe, including in electronic form.

Rospotrebnadzor emphasized that the user has the right to cancel the service at any time after its registration, including the period until the next debit.

If the debit still occurred after the refusal, the money will be refunded in full, except for the payment for the period actually used.

Alexander Khaminsky, a lawyer and head of the law enforcement center in Moscow and the Moscow Region, reminded on April 1 that Russians will be able to cancel a paid subscription to online services if they unlink their bank card from the service's personal account. He clarified that the relevant law came into force on March 1.
